Which Niches Are Profitable?
People buy courses for two reasons: Two improve their business or career so they can make more money or to improve at a hobby. Naturally, there is much more demand for online courses that help with businesses and careers. Hobby-based courses can also be lucrative, but the most lucrative niches for online courses are:
- Programming and technology
- Professional skills
- Business skills
- Design
- Marketing
Teach What You Know Very Well
Even though you may be an expert in your niche, you may not be the only one. There may be many experts and many of those experts might have gotten into the Elearning business ahead of you. If that's the case, your niche might be saturated and crowded which would make it difficult for you to compete when it comes to marketing.
Before finalizing on a course niche, you must research how competitive it is. If you are planning to teach on Udemy, your niche research may be as simple as going on the Udemy website and searching around for courses in your niche. If it looks filled with courses that have hundreds or thousands of reviews, it may be too competitive.
Competition vs. Demand
One of the goals during your course niche research and planning is to find a niche in which you are an expert that is also not too competitive and has a good amount of demand.
How much demand is enough? How much competition is too much? These are case by case evaluations, but as a rule of thumb, in the beginning you should not aim for the skies. Aim modestly. It's better to have modest success than to drown in too much competition.
